Gambia 2022 National Assembly Elections Held Today
The Gambia will hold general elections for 53 members of the 2022 National Assembly today.
Today’s election follows the December 2021 presidential elections where incumbent president Adama Barrow won a majority of the votes. President Adama Barrow had originally defeated former President Yahya Jammeh in 2016, ending Jammeh’s dictatorial regime.
Since 2016, The Gambia has been undergoing a relatively peaceful political transition which has been characterized by active civic engagement, a judiciary that is independent of executive interference and an active executive branch that has undertaken political reforms to ensure peaceful and fair elections.
Concerns about political instability in the region have been a major feature of African politics. Despite this, The Gambia’s upcoming parliamentary election will be another step in its peaceful transition process, serving as an example for neighboring countries in West Africa. ECOWAS leaders like Nana Akufo-Adda of Ghana and Muhammadu Buhari praised The Gambia for credible elections. Large voter participation, and orderly conduct are expected features of today’s election.
