Ghana Begins Repairs on Ofankor-Nsawam Road
Ghana will begin repairs on the Ofankor-Nsawam road today.
According to Ghana’s Ministry of Roads and Highways, the rehabilitation will include the reconstruction of the road’s concrete pavement, expansion of the main carriageway from 2-lanes to 3-lanes, and designs to reduce traffic, vehicle operating cost, and wait times for public transportation.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road forms part of the National Route 6 (N6), a key link in Ghana’s transportation and economic network connecting the capital city of Accra to the second largest city, Kumasi. The road is also crucial for exports to nearby landlocked countries, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, from Ghana’s ports. The upcoming rehabilitation project is predicted to take two years and will cost approximately $42 million USD. The project was initially set to begin in 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic.
Although the project will benefit the economy by increasing investment from construction companies, it will also increase public spending. This poses short-term risks to the government’s plans for dealing with inflation, which included cuts to spending and adjustments to Ghana’s monetary policy. In the medium and long-term, Ghana will also have to diversify its exports to take full advantage of the improved road.
