Government representatives from more than 190 countries will gather in Bonn, Germany today for climate talks.

The conference will set the agenda for this year’s annual UN climate change convention, COP24, to be held in Poland in December. There, it is expected the signatory countries of the 2015 Paris Agreement will begin implementing the necessary policies to prevent global temperatures from rising above two degrees Celsius of pre-industrial times.

This year will be an important one for the struggle against climate change, after a UN report late last year revealed countries are not doing enough to limit greenhouse gas emissions. The expected departure of the US from that agreement in 2020 could further weaken the fight.

With developing countries set to suffer most from climate change—economically and, in some cases, existentially—greater support from developed nations is imperative. Indeed, expect China and India to take a leading in role in advocating for that support, which could see the two garner influence with the global south.
