Global Solutions Summit chaired by the G20 concludes today
The virtual Global Solutions Summit chaired by Group of 20 (G20) is set to conclude today.
The Global Solutions Initiative is a global collaborative enterprise comprised of a network of world-renowned think tanks, bringing together researchers, policymakers, business leaders and civil society representatives to tackle pressing global problems.
Leaders have stated the Summit will examine economic, social and technological challenges facing the G20. Additionally, the Summit will strongly emphasize climate change. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are among the keynote speakers today.
As members have increasingly focused on climate-related financial risks, discussions on corporate environmental and sustainability issues are expected, emphasizing the importance of promoting investments in renewable energy projects. This will likely fall in line with the objective of Italian minister Mario Draghi—holding the annual presidency of G20—who is expected to promote the brokering of an agreement on global minimum corporate taxation before the Group’s meeting in July. Thus, the G20 will likely advocate for mobilizing the public and private sector finance to drive net-zero transition by implementing the International Platform for Climate Finance, which will serve to improve the compatibility of approaches for identifying climate-aligned and sustainable investments.
