Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Cooperation Commission to meet
The two-day 28th Meeting of Iran-Turkey Joint Economic Cooperation Commission (JEC) will convene today in a hybrid format.
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez will join Iranian Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi and JEC chairpersons to discuss furthering regional and bilateral economic ties.
The consultation follows Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s recent phone talks with his Turkish counterpart President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 14. In the conversation, Rouhani expressed optimism for the upcoming JEC and stressed the need for continual economic cooperation in energy, petrochemical and commodity trade between Ankara and Tehran.
Following the 6th meeting of the High-level Cooperation Council last September, expect members from both sides to outline a path to hitting their $30 billion trade target in the coming years. Erdogan has acknowledged the importance of Iran-Turkey solidarity beyond the economy. Strong bilateral relations between the two Islamic nations are crucial after Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facility in Natanz. While local business and exporters will feel optimistic, the talks signify Turkey’s alignment with Iran on recent disputes with Israeli and US-imposed economic sanctions.
