Iran’s Majlis to hold vote of confidence on cabinet nominees
Iran’s Majlis (Iranian Parliament) will put forth votes of confidence for President Ebrahim Raisi’s list of ministers for his government today.
President Raisi’s list of cabinet nominees is expected to be conservative and include officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. One of the most notable cabinet nominees slated to lead Iran’s Foreign Ministry, is Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, a former deputy foreign minister for Arab and African Affairs who is known as a hawkish diplomat with anti-US views. It is very unlikely that any ministers will be voted against, as they have already been approved by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
As a result, expect a swift approval of the nominees and for the country to take a more conservative tilt compared to the preceding Rouhani Government. In the long term, expect Amir-Abdollahian to play a key role in the continuation of nuclear talks between Iran, the United States and the European Union. President Raisi is keen to negotiate the lifting of US sanctions on Iran by restoring the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but Amir-Abdollahian and the Raisi government’s hardline approach could potentially continue to stall nuclear-related talks as they are expected to drive a hard bargain.
