Israeli defense minister to visit Morocco
Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz will visit Morocco today to sign bilateral security cooperation agreements.
These agreements result from the normalization of Moroccan-Israeli relations under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, which prompted the restoration of mid-level ties. This marks the first diplomatic visit since normalization. The agreements themselves will enhance security cooperation and include plans to develop the Moroccan domestic air power industry, specifically drones.
These agreements are significant for Israel because they have been focused on strengthening their alliances in the Middle East to counter Iran. Iran and its nuclear program have become an increased regional concern following the US’ withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2018. Additionally, Iran has threatened the destabilization of Israel. Morocco is pursuing the Iron Dome defense system from Israel as part of its air defense system, although Israel signing off on that seems unlikely.
Expect relations to expand as both countries pursue their individual goals. These bilateral ties may alarm Iran as they see Israel and Morocco reinforcing their defenses. If Iran presents an increased threat to Israel, expect Morocco and its defenses to be touted as an ally.
