The President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, will conclude a visit to India today.

During the four-day official trip, Solih met with an Indian business delegation and held diplomatic talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders discussed a number of issues around security and political cooperation.

The two countries share mutual concerns in the region; therefore, strengthening their alliance is strategically important to both states. Malé’s geopolitical position plays a vital role in New Delhi’s India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, a government initiative that aims to establish friendly relations with neighboring states. New Delhi is preparing to provide up to $100 million for Malé to use on its developmental projects during the short- to medium-term.

Both nations will likely grow closer through India’s investment. New Delhi plans to lead several long-term construction projects that would pull Malé closer to New Delhi’s influence, thus allowing India to further exercise its growing control of the Indian Ocean. The Greater Malé connectivity project sponsored by India is key to accomplishing this goal, while also aiding the Maldives. The prospective bridge would allow Malé to connect with other islands in the area.
