More protests expected across Hong Kong as police warn of violence
Hong Kong police have warned that they will block an anti-establishment protest due to be held today in the central district of Kowloon.
Although ‘dead’ according to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, a bill that would allow extradition to mainland China has exposed underlying trade issues and loss of freedom for pro-democracy activists in the Chinese-controlled region.
An additional police warning has been issued for rallies in the neighbouring districts of Hung Hom and To Kwa Wan. This is the second time security services have raised fears about protests; earlier protests in Sha Tin and Sheung Shui resulted in scuffles between protesters and police. Organisers of the rallies insist they will continue despite police warnings.
The last Kowloon rally saw more than 230,000 take to the streets. Today’s rally raises the prospect of major clashes between police and protestors, with a possibility of the demonstration being stopped and teargas being fired again.
