Naruhito concludes visit to the UK

Japan’s imperial family concludes their visit to the UK today.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan concluded their 7-day state visit to the UK today which included private engagements and official activities hosted by King Charles III. This was Naruhito’s second overseas visit since ascending to power in 2019. At a state banquet, King Charles emphasized continued cooperation for global peace and stability, while Naruhito expressed gratitude and noted robust bilateral relations.

In recent years, ties between the UK and Japan have improved. Since Brexit, the UK has sought to strengthen economic relations with Japan, signing trade agreements like the CEPA in 2019 and joining the CPTPP in 2023. In terms of security relations, Japan’s condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2023 has accelerated UK-Japan security ties, exemplified by the Hiroshima Accord. During the banquet, Emperor Naruhito referred to the UK as a “friend like no other.”

Naruhito’s visit before the UK’s general election on July 4, 2024, highlights the importance of maintaining diplomatic ties regardless of political changes. This visit enhances public and political goodwill, fostering future cooperation. Expect the Emperor to take on more foreign policy roles in the future, contrasting with the traditionally restrained royal interference in politics.
