Qatar to hold first Public-Private Partnership conference today
The Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry will hold its first Public-Private Conference today via videoconference.
The conference will be led by Minister of Commerce & Industry Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari and Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani. The meeting aims to improve understanding within the business sector of the new “Law No. 12 of 2020” (known as the PPP Law) that will regulate and encourage partnership between Doha’s public and private sectors. Speakers from both the government and private sector will attend the conference, along with representatives of domestic government agencies and some international experts.
Qatar hopes that the law will advance its National Vision of 2030, which holds economic development as one of its four key pillars. The PPP law aims to increase private sector involvement in Doha’s local economy at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has forced Qatar to halt construction on public infrastructure projects, including a new 75-kilometre metro system. Expect conference discussions to focus on the specifics of how Qatar can spur a quick return to economic growth and forge ahead with infrastructure projects despite mushrooming COVID-19 cases in the nation’s labour camps that have generated complaints of human rights violations.
