Royal Jordanian Airlines will resume flights between Amman and Damascus starting today.
The move to resume flights between the Jordanian and Syrian capitals follows the reopening of the Nasib-Jaber border crossing last week and marks a significant milestone in reopening trade between the two countries.
Stalled by military and political conflict in Syria in 2015, reopening the border crossing—which sits on the Damascus-Amman international highway and the busiest border crossing into Syria—is an effort to build stronger economic relations between the two countries which landed on opposing sides of the Syrian civil war. Bilateral ties between Jordan and Syria are on the upswing with Russia acting as a mediator in building positive relations.
COVID-19 hobbled an already slowing Jordanian economy, and trade in natural resources with and through Syria is seen as the key to jumpstarting both the economies of Jordan and war-torn Syria. Today’s reopening of air routes will facilitate travel and trade between the two countries. Subsequently, expect the two sides to explore trade projects that capitalize on the physical land bridges that the two countries occupy between North Africa and Europe, acting as a conduit for goods into and out of the region.
