Somali Parliament Elects Leadership Positions for 2022
The Lower and Upper Houses of Somalia’s Parliament will today elect speakers and deputies.
Following parliamentary elections held earlier this month, roughly 30 which have been sites of tension with the central government in Mogadishu.
Parliament is responsible for the election of a president, in line with Somalia’s indirect electoral process which has been delayed due to political disputes between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble over the extension of Farmaajo’s presidential mandate. Attacks from in recent months have also derailed the election process, as the group has carried out indiscriminate attacks on The militant group’s most recent attack killed four soldiers at the Af Urur military base in the north of the country.
Although the election of speakers and deputies of the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament appears to be a step in the right direction towards a presidential election expect further delays as a combination of political infighting between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and destabilizing attacks from al-Shabab continues to hinder progress in the short and medium terms.
