South African Education Conference to Conclude
South Africa’s Department of Education will today conclude its ‘indaba’ on Early Grade Reading Research (EGRS).
During the two-day panel, academicians from around the world discussed methods of teaching various skills to better the country’s overall education system. The South African government has long prioritized the initiative to tackle the challenges that come along with its lagging educational system. South Africa’s low literacy rate—especially amongst its youth—constitutes a major issue for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party as the current situation hampers development.
The EGRS remains the top government program aimed at improving nationwide youth learning and teaching. The two-day trials may be quite impactful, as the country’s literacy rate will likely increase by a slight margin during the medium-to long term as a result of today’s efforts. The rise in literacy rate will also be reflected in the state’s GDP given that prioritizing educational development will open more jobs. Moving forward, the Department of Education will continue to allocate money to the EGRS along with similar programs that are aimed at developing education. Under this framework, the ANC will continue to seek guidance from international academic institutions that will provide assistance in such teaching methods.
