South Korean lawmakers to pay working visit to Lithuania and Latvia
South Korean lawmakers will conclude an eight-day visit to Latvia and Lithuania today.
The South Korean delegation is composed of four lawmakers—two representatives and two assemblymen. Representative Yoon Sang-hyun heads the Korea-Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the National Assembly while Representative Yoo Sung-kull heads the Korea-Lithuania Parliamentary Friendship Group; the two unnamed assemblymen belong to each group, respectively. This visit commemorates the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and the two Baltic countries and has included multilateral talks on international development, human rights and economic cooperation through tourism, trade and investment.
Expect the visit to help bolster relations between South Korea, Latvia and Lithuania, respectively. In the short-term, political and economic dialogue between the two countries will likely increase, especially given Lithuania’s recent decision to open an embassy in Korea in September. Stronger relations between Korea and the two Baltic countries will also enable Latvia and Lithuania to diversify its interests in Asia to decrease dependence on China, while allowing South Korea to enlarge its international presence which it has been aggressively pursuing in recent months.
