Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is addressing the parliament today to provide details on the business activities of his wife, Begona Gomez, who is under investigation for corruption.

The investigation began after the anti-corruption agency Manos Limpias submitted materials to the court, allegedly concerning her corrupt business dealings and abuse of power. However, the agency stated that it cannot guarantee the accuracy of the online newspaper reports on which the case is based. In response to these allegations, Sanchez temporarily stepped down from his duties, accusing right-wing factions of attempting to undermine his political authority. Due to the lack of substantial evidence, the case is likely to be dismissed soon, as the prosecuting authority in Madrid announced its intention to appeal for its dismissal.

However, the corruption scandal further exacerbated diplomatic relations between Spain and Argentina, which were already strained due to offensive public remarks towards each other. Thus, Spain recalled its ambassador for consultation after Argentina’s President Javier Milei made a blatant comment towards Begona Gomez. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares described this event as leading to “the most serious state in recent history.” Relations between the two countries are expected to plummet further, as Milei is unlikely to publicly apologize for his behavior.
