Talks on Master Plan Delhi-2041 vision begin

Delhi will today open the Delhi Master Plan 2041 (DMP 2041) project for public consultation.

The Delhi Development Association’s (DDA) DMP 2041 looks to overhaul Delhi’s infrastructure to address, among other things, the proliferation of makeshift housing.

Currently, more than 30% of Delhi’s 30 million residents live in sprawling ramshackle slums labelled ‘unauthorised colonies’ due to a lack of housing options. In response, DMP 2041 will look to directly engage with these unauthorised colonies to rehabilitate existing communities and build new, affordable housing. However, with specific policy changes and cost still to be hammered out, Delhiites have remained sceptical.

Expect today’s public consultation to result in heated debate between the DDA and Delhiites over the project’s feasibility, timeline and efficacy. Regardless, the project will continue past the public consultation phase as the DDA is desperate to address the housing crisis. Long-term, expect DMP 2041 to focus heavily on the development of new cities as a means of addressing the housing shortage rather than rehabilitating current slums. Still, it is unlikely the DDA’s plan of creating entirely new cities will be completed by 2041—the less ambitious DMP 2021, which began in 2007, has yet to be completed.
