Theresa May heads to Berlin for Brexit discussions with Angela Merkel
British PM Theresa May will today meet with Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss her latest Brexit proposal and the future of UK-EU relations.
Among the proposals, which she will present to her Cabinet tomorrow, is keeping the UK in a single market in a bid to allow the Irish border to remain open.
The Irish border is one of the major points of contention for a Brexit plan, with both EU and UK leaders impatient for clarity on a specific and realistic transition process. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney has expressed that putting a border back in place threatens the normalisation achieved since the 1998 Good Friday agreement and is unnerving to citizens. Additionally, the EU legal service indicated that doing so would undermine the guaranteed freedoms of the EU, namely that of capital and goods.
In accordance with the Confederation of British Industry, there is no visible solution that can satisfy both the political and economic needs of Northern Ireland. Conversely, neither the EU nor the UK can move forward with Brexit before the future of the Irish border is determined.
