UK demonstrations focus on inequality and opposition to Conservative Party austerity
Today, in a ‘Britain is Broken’ march in London, thousands will call for the ousting of the ruling Conservative Party in order to end austerity measures. Inspired by recent protests in France, participants will show their allegiance by also wearing yellow vests.
Austerity measures imposed by the Conservative Party means every low-income earner will receive $900 annually less in social welfare by 2020. This hits hard for those already suffering from the cuts to public services in 2010 such as the 17% decline for the police forces and the annual 13.5% cut to the National Health System.
However, the main catalyst for the march is the stalling of a Brexit deal, which some fear could lead to a second referendum. This follows on from last Saturday where pro-Brexit protestors wore yellow vests. Recent research shows that generally, the pro-Brexit populations were low-income areas—the areas most affected by austerity.
As frustration grows over the stalling of a Brexit deal, expect more battlers to join the yellow vest movement. As the momentum grows, also expect more protests in other European capitals as well.
