Vladimir Putin to address Federal Assembly
Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver his annual address today to the country’s Federal Assembly.
During last year’s address, Putin announced sweeping constitutional amendments. A key reform was the presidential “reset”, which allows Putin to run for the presidency in two more elections. These changes were cemented during a nationwide plebiscite in July 2020, attracting mixed responses, including an attempted boycott led by opposition politician Alexei Navalny.
Expect Putin to present a domestic agenda that highlights unity and internal stability. As he is now able to potentially remain in power until 2036, the president can focus on post-pandemic development, whilst continuing to tighten his grip on power.
Today’s address will likely be devoted to Russia’s socioeconomic development, with Putin expected to discuss topics ranging from indexing pensions, support benefits for children, health care and measures that will stimulate business and investment activities. With the impact of COVID-19 continuing to be felt, Putin’s focus on introducing systemic measures of support will attempt to paint a picture of a steadfast Russia, despite internal discord.
