Women in Sustainability Africa

The Women in Sustainability Africa summit begins in Accra today.

The objective of the Women in Sustainability Africa summit (WiSA) is to enhance the role of women as source of labor and agents of sustainability. Organized in collaboration with key Ghanaian ministries and international organizations, the summit brings together high-level leaders, development experts, and diverse actors to promote inclusive solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Africa is the continent with the second highest levels of inequality in the world, which affects income, gender, food security, and health. WiSA champions ethical leadership by women and encourages partnerships to close inequality gaps and accelerate sustainability and climate resilience across African economies.

Africa remains off track to meet most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, particularly in areas such as gender equality, food security, and climate action. Structural challenges, ranging from limited institutional capacity to external economic dependencies, continue to slow progress. Initiatives like WiSA signal a strategic shift by integrating women as central agents of sustainability. Empowering women, who are often frontline actors in agriculture, healthcare, and education, can accelerate SDG achievement through inclusive decision-making and community-driven solutions. Short term, Africa will continue to depend on AID for adaptation and development of their economies. Long term, community-driven approaches are expected to persist due to high levels of rural population and limited governmental capacity in some regions.
