The Dominican Liberation Party’s (PLD) Central Committee will meet today to discuss a path forward for the party.

This year marked a huge defeat for the formerly governing PLD, which lost not only the presidential elections to the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), but also a majority in the Senate and a plurality in the lower Chamber of Deputies. After its defeat, outgoing PLD president Danilo Medina has assumed control of the party, promising major amendments to its platform and operations.

In today’s meeting, the party will be tasked with planning its Ordinary Congress, which will run from October 4 to December 15. The recently leaked audios of Medina that shed light on the role played by bribes in the party’s internal operations are sure to be discussed during the PLD’s congress. Likewise, investigations into corruption charges against members of two previous PLD administrations, particularly Marcelo Bahia Odebrecht, is likely to be addressed. As the party seeks to regain voter trust and return to power, these issues will be barriers in the way of the PLD’s re-election agenda.
