The US ambassador to the EU, Gordon Sondland, will testify before the House Intelligence Committee today as part of the ongoing Trump impeachment probe.

Sondland is expected to provide details about communications between former Ukraine ambassador Bill Taylor, ex-Ukraine envoy Kurt Volker and President Trump. In the series of text messages, Taylor questioned the withholding of security assistance to Ukraine in return for an inquiry into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s involvement with a Ukrainian energy company.

The Ukrainian scandal has had a noticeable impact on the current US presidential election. Since September, Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic candidate running against Joe Biden, has overtaken him in some prominent polls as the favourite for the nomination. Despite this, Biden is actually polling better against Trump than in previous months. Furthermore, Trump’s disapproval ratings have gone up and 50.2% of Americans now support impeachment.

It is unclear how the Ukraine scandal might impact Trump in the long run. On one hand, it has momentum and strong media coverage. On the other, Trump has endured previous legal probes and has had success in dodging prior scandals.
