The 64th Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will today conclude in Vienna.

High-ranking representatives from IAEA member states discussed a range of issues including nuclear non-proliferation, reactor technologies, AI-based approaches in nuclear science and the role of nuclear energy in combatting climate change.

The conference brought special attention to unpacking the relationship between nuclear energy and the transition to clean energy through its Scientific Forum. While many speakers in the forum agreed that nuclear energy—as an energy source that does not emit greenhouse gas—must inevitably be part of the solution to the climate crisis, financial and security considerations are barriers to its broader use, disadvantaging countries that need it the most.

In the short term, expect the IAEA to be focused on securing the operations of nuclear facilities around the world while continuing to work towards fostering technological innovation among its member states. In the medium term, expect to see a rise in investment in nuclear energy, as well as a gradual expansion in nuclear energy capabilities around the globe.
